Four women living in a conservative and traditional rural Indian village come to realize that life is unbearable for them. Rani is trying to organize her son's arranged marriage but barely feels like a desirable woman herself as a thirty-four year old widow. Bijli is a dancer/prostitute who finds every proclamation of love to her made by someone who really wants to be her new pimp and make money off of her. Lajjo is barren and abused by her husband but she discovers that she is not the infertile one in the couple in a most pleasurable way. Rani sees her new daughter-in-law Janaki being treated as poorly by her son as she was by her husband. One act of courage will change the direction of their lives forever. A visually-stunning production shot by Russell Carpenter (TITANIC).
