Big World Pictures celebrates MARIE CURIE: THE COURAGE OF KNOWLEDGE (review)

This biopic of the first female winner of the Nobel Prize (twice) examines her struggles in the aftermath of her husband's death to continue pursuing the use of radium in treating cancer, dealing with the sexism of her colleagues at the Sorbonne and the Academy of Scienes, and the scandalous love affair that threatened her reputation purely based on her gender.

From the director of AFERIM! this loose depiction of the short life of Romanian writer Max Blecher follows his admission to a private clinic to treat tuberculosis requiring him to spend his days in a full body cast where he learns that his fellow patients have found ways to adapt to their situation and live life to its fullest.

Big World Picture hears FALSE CONFESSIONS (review)

Luc Bondy's final film was this updated production of the Marivaux play filmed during the day while the production was on the stage at night with the same cast in period dress.  A young man contrives his way into a household because he is in love with the lady of the house, but his attempts to trick her into falling in love with him are complicated by meddling relatives and servants as well as misunderstandings and the schemes of others.  Isabelle Huppert, Louis Garrel, and Bulle Ogier star.

Big World Pictures births VIKTORIA (review)

Born at the height of communism in Bulgaria and unwanted by her mother, Viktoria is held up as the socialist baby of the decade for being born without a navel (symbolizing her lack of dependence on the past).  Spoiled and praised for her bad behavior, Viktoria finds herself outcast and in search of a new identity when communism crumbles and democracy takes over.  As she grows up in the next decade, she finds herself emotionally torn between her mother's hatred and indifference and her discovery of her own womanhood.

In this award-winning Romanian period drama, a constable and his son travel across Wallachia in search of a runaway Romany slave.  Meeting with various sections of 1830's Romanian society, the son is exposed to their various prejudices and looks to his father for guidance, but the older man may be too set in his ways to take a stand when it appear that their captive is innocent of his crimes but may be killed anyway by his master.

Big World Pictures is IN BLOOM (review)

Growing up in war-torn Georgia, timid Eka and outgoing Natia respond differently to the bullying and harassment they experience in their daily lives.  When her boyfriend gives her a gun before going to Moscow, Natia forces it on Eka to defend herself but Eka just hides it.  When Natia is abducted by a neighbor and forced into marriage however, Eka starts to find her voice and to rebel against the wrongs she sees around her.
