Severin Films gets the VIDEO NASTIES (review)

Severin Films brings Nucleus Films' informative and poignant documentaries about the eighties Video Nasties hysteria in which exploitation films were scapegoated by conservative politicians and the moral minority to explain juvenile delinquency, rising crime, and other violent acts.  The documentaries expose the arrogance of the politicians and the censors, the harassment against those who dared to criticize censorship, and the lives and reputations ruined by police raids and public prosecutions.  They also reveal the birth of fanzines, video trading, underground film festivals, and pre-internet social networks of fans, critics, filmmakers, and scholars whose lifelong love affair with the Grindhouse was spurred by those who tried to suppress the unwatchable.

Nucleus Films releases NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES (review)

When Dr. Krallman learns that his son Julio's leukemia is incurable, he decides that a gorilla heart transplant will be potent enough to fight the cancerous cells.  It proves too potent, and Julio turns into an ape man from the neck up and a fumbling sex maniac from the waist down and menaces the town.  Mexican exploitation vet Rene Cardona (SURVIVE) goosed up his original film for an adult variant titled HORROR Y SEXO, and US exploitation purveyor Jerald Intrater then added graphically gory eye-gouging, scalp-ripping inserts for what became NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES (banned in the UK during the Video Nasties craze and presented here uncut from Nucleus Films).

Nucleus Films has CANNIBAL GIRLS!

Ivan Reitman's early CANNIBAL GIRLS is getting a UK DVD release courtesy of Nucleus Films on February 14. Clifford and Gloria (SCTV's Eugene Levy and Andrea Martin) honeymoon in a snowy Canadian town and hear the legend of the Cannibal Girls who lured men to their isolated house.  The young, wisecracking couple are recommended to the old house which has now been converted into a gourmet restaurant run by the cloaked and top-hatted Reverend Alex St. John (Ronald Ulrich) and three pretty women.  After sampling the cuisine, they are invited to stay the night rather than walk home in the dark.  Will Clifford and Gloria wind up on the next day's menu?  Long unavailable since its AIP theatrical release (and a rare Canadian VHS tape), CANNIBAL GIRLS has been remastered in high definition.  Nucleus Films' forthcoming R2 PAL DVD is a cool extras-laden package available just in time for Valentines Day.
