Born at the height of communism in Bulgaria and unwanted by her mother, Viktoria is held up as the socialist baby of the decade for being born without a navel (symbolizing her lack of dependence on the past). Spoiled and praised for her bad behavior, Viktoria finds herself outcast and in search of a new identity when communism crumbles and democracy takes over. As she grows up in the next decade, she finds herself emotionally torn between her mother's hatred and indifference and her discovery of her own womanhood.
