A Carpathian mountain woodcutter, his wife, and young child face a series of misfortunes after they are ejected from their home and exploited in more ways than one by a logging company that has bought the land. When the lecherous manager tries to force himself on the wife in her husband's absence, she falls ill and even praying for a miracle may not be enough. Rarely seen outside of its native Hungary (where it was soon banned by the German occupiers) and the Venice Film Festival (De Sica and Zavattini have cited it as a major influence on Italian neorealism).
