In this Napoleonic war epic, the French have invaded Portugal but the Anglo-Portuguese soldiers under General Wellington have secretly prepared fortifications to prevent them from reaching Lisbon and the sea. As the French advance, Portuguese and British soldiers, as well as nobles, the poor, and deserters flee the villages and make for the Lines of Torres Vedras for a final showdown with the enemy. Original director Raoul Ruiz died in pre-production and the film was taken over by his widow Valeria Sarmiento.
