Transferred from Naples after punching out his boss, Inspector Nardone begins anew in a Milan that is undergoing changes in its criminal underworld.  Assembling a squad of police misfits and sly informers, Nardone balances high profile murders and robberies with trying to tie other crimes to a powerful citizen and an ambitious future crime boss while he and his squad balance their complex personal lives, loves, and tragedies spanning in a series of adventures spanning 1949 to 1959.
