Not based on the Tolstoy novel, Anand Patwardhan's stirring documentary WAR AND PEACE looks at the ways in which the arms race between India and Pakistan was not a security issue but a nationalistic statement that had the effect of destabilizing the region, mobilizing religious extremist movements (although it also inspired peace and anti-nuclear movements), poisoned their own people, and created martyrs out of soldiers in battles that resolved nothing.
