Eureka summons THE DEVIL at THE THIRD PART OF THE NIGHT (review)

The first two films of exiled Polish filmmaker Andrzej Zulawski take a subversive look at his country's history in fantastical forms.  In THE THIRD PART OF THE NIGHT, a Polish Jewish man from an aristocratic family flees the murder of his wife and child by Soviet soldiers only to become involved with a woman who is his wife's exact double, forcing him to reflect on his past life and things he has blocked out about it.  Banned until 1987, THE DEVIL is the tale of a young aristocrat imprisoned for an assassination attempt and freed by a Satanic figure who follows him home and exposes the web of betrayal, perversion, and murder behind the image of his noble family.
