Polish maverick filmmaker Andrzej Zulawski (POSSESSION) had one of his films banned and another halted three-quarters into production and was asked to leave the country twice... and also invited back twice. In his debut THE THIRD PART OF THE NIGHT, a young man witnesses the murders of his mother, wife, and child by the German occupation and joins the resistance movement. When a man is shot and captured in his place, he discovers that the man's pregnant wife is a double for his wife. As he tries to redeem himself by helping her, he starts to reflect on his marriage and disturbing things he did not want to acknowledge.
In THE DEVIL, a young man captured for an attempted assassination of the King is freed by a mysterious man who then shows him that his family and friends have betrayed him. The cost of his revenge may be his soul.
In ON THE SILVER GLOBE, astronauts land on another planet hoping to start civilization over again only to make the same mistakes. When another astronaut arrives years later to investigate, he finds himself held up by the people as a living god with all that entails when he cannot answer their questions about life and death. An epic with a notoriously-troubled production history, the film's year-long production was halted in 1977, finished in 1986, and released in 1988. A delirious precursor to DUNE (Jodorowsky's and Lynch's).
