Hammer's WAKE WOOD Region 2 DVD from Momentum Pictures (reviewed)

I have reviewed the Momentum Pictures Region 2 PAL DVD of Hammer's second comeback film (after LET ME IN) for DVDBeaver.  Aidan Gillen (TV's THE WIRE) and Eva Barthistle (THE CHILDREN) play a couple who move to a remote Irish village after the death of their daughter.  They discover among the locals - lead by Timothy Spall (GOTHIC) - pagan rituals capable to bringing back the dead for three days to allow their loved ones closure.  They consent to the ritual and their daughter is returned to them, but the rules of Wake Wood have been violated, and something deadly has been woken.  Writer/producer Brendan McCarthy also produced the Irish horror films OUTCAST and ISOLATION.

MPI has also picked up WAKE WOOD for US DVD and BluRay release under the Dark Sky banner.

Scorpion Releasing's SEXTETTE starring Mae West (reviewed)

I've reviewed Scorpion Releasing's DVD of Mae West's SEXTETTE (streeting April 19th) for DVD Drive-In.  West plays Marlo Manners, silver screen sex siren who has just wedded husband #6 (a very young Timothy Dalton aka James Bond #4, or perhaps #7or 8 if you count the many Bonds of the original CASINO ROYALE).  Their attempts to consummate the marriage are continually disrupted by multiple ex-husbands, costume fittings, screen tests, gossip columnists, an American Olympic gymnastics team, a UN conference, and a tape of Marlo's memoirs that features damaging information.  Dom DeLuise, George Hamilton, Ringo Starr, Tony Curtis, Rona Barrett, and Regis Philbin also star.

Scorpion Releasing's I WANT WHAT I WANT (reviewed)

I've reviewed Scorpion Releasing's DVD of John Dexter's I WANT WHAT I WANT (... to be a woman) with Anne Heywood - streeting on April 19th - over at DVD Drive-In (review HERE).  Heywood plays a young man who feels like a woman on the inside.  After leaving his abusive father, he makes the transition from Roy to Wendy and takes up lodgings in a boarding house.  Her neighbors and landlords slowly draw her out into the world, but she fears being discovered as a man.  Things get even more complicated when she finds herself falling for another man.  Jill Bennett (FULL CIRCLE/THE HAUNTING OF JULIA), Harry Andrews (WHAT THE PEEPER SAW) and Michael Coles (THE SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA) co-star.

From Scorpion Releasing in April: SEXTETTE and I WANT WHAT I WANT!

On April 19, Scorpion Releasing will release two oddball pick-ups from, respectively, Crown International and Cinerama Releasing: Sextette starring the "Sin-Sational" Mae West (based on her own play) and I Want What I Want (To Be A Woman) starring Anne Heywood (RING OF DARKNESS).  In SEXTETTE, Marlo Manners (West) has just wed her sixth husband, but her attempts to consumate the marriage are disrupted by two ex-husbands, fans, reporters, an Olympic wrestling team, her agent, and more in this campy musical comedy.  SEXTETTE also features Timothy Dalton (THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS), Ringo Starr (CANDY), George Hamilton (LOVE AT FIRST BITE), Tony Curtis (SOME LIKE IT HOT), Alice Cooper (MONSTER DOG), Dom Deluise (HAUNTED HONEYMOON), and Regis Philbin.  In I WANT WHAT I WANT, Roy (Anne Heywood) is a woman in a man's body.  Escaping his abusive father, he tries to start a new life as Wendy.  Jill Bennett (FULL CIRCLE), Harry Andrews (EQUUS), and Michael Cole (SATANIC RITES OF DRACULA) co-star.

BMX BANDITS hit DVD from Severin Films (review)

The film Nicole Kidman would rather forget is an Australian (and American) cult favorite: BMX BANDITS by Brian Trenchard-Smith (STUNT ROCK).  Two boys and a girl find a cache of walkie-talkies and sell them to buy BMX bikes.  Little do they know that the walkie-talkies belong to The Boss, a criminal who planned to use them to rob banks (the walkie talkies are locked onto the police bandwidth, allowing the criminals to stay ahead of the law).  Now his henchmen (RAZORBACK's David Argue and MAD MAX's John Ley) are chasing the kids across the water, through Sydney's biggest shopping mall, and any other place where mass destruction of property is bound to happen!  Oscar-winning cinematographer John Seale gives the action a slick look and there is plenty of bad eighties hair (I'm lookin' at you, Nicole) and bad eighties fashions (check out that Spandex).

Raro/eOne's PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK reviewed (another one)

Besides the review/comparison of the Raro Video/eOne Region 0 NTSC DVD of THE PERFUME OF THE LADY IN BLACK that I wrote for DVDBeaver (review link HERE), I was also asked to write a review of the disc for DVD Drive-In.  AUTOPSY and FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET's Mimsy Farmer is once again a fragile, father-obsessed, neurotic in Rome.  This time, she might be the victim of a black magic conspiracy (or it might all be in her head).  Maurizio Bonuglia (TOP SENSATION), Lara Wendel (GHOSTHOUSE, TENEBRE), and Nike Arrighi (THE DEVIL RIDES OUT) co-star.

Code Red teaches a WHITE RAT HOW TO SCORE WITH GIRLS (review)

I've reviewed Code Red Releasing's HOW TO SCORE WITH GIRLS/WHITE RAT double feature for DVD Drive-In (review link below).  Code Red Releasing has warned us in advance that the only remaining copies of these two films are video sources (3/4" for HOW TO SCORE WITH GIRLS, VHS for WHITE RAT) and not to expect remastered transfers.  In WHITE RAT, disgraced policeman-turned-PI Mike Capon is obsessively investigating the murder of Alice Gleason.  The suspects include her rival Paula, her shady lover Alexander, his lackey Lou, and Mike himself.  In HOW TO SCORE WITH GIRLS (aka CRY YOUR PURPLE HEART OUT!), three soldiers are on leave in New York and looking to score after two years without.
