Down on her luck Nelly walks out on a loveless marriage thanks to the no-strings-attached offer of money to pay off her debts from wealthy Pierre Arnaud. He further offers to pay her to help him finish his memoirs. While their relationship constantly threatens to give way to romance or lust, it evolves into something more as they open up to one another and are both tugged in other directions in their guarded personal lives in the final film of Claude Sautet (UN COEUR EN HIVER).
